Belief would be one facet of consciousness. And consciousness is something. Our mind if full of data, but consciousness leafs through all this data and amalgamates it into thought. Consciousness is akin to the the "IF" mechanism that directs processing through a computer program. (Interestingly, "IF" is a bifurcation mechanism.) The "IF" mechanism works by testing an item encountered by chance with a preset need or requirement. Say our requirement is for coffee in our cup. Then that's the preset need. It was probably set when body chemistry informed us we were thirsty. Then comes the test. Is there coffee in my cup? The test here is based on preset mind images of full/empty cup. Yes, it's logical for the mind to proceed this way. But just what is IT that's logical. It's the mind; the consciousness. The mind has to be a physical something (a cascade of yet unknown particles?). Quantum physics is telling us that, and if we really think about the world we can see it right in front of our faces. And now to come full circle, belief is a real physical entity because it is part of consciousness, which itself is a physical entity following the logic above.
Belief IS a wonderful thing. It allows us to know the unknowable (or fool ourselves into thinking we do). And I don't know if I would call it another dimension or a conscious mechanism by which dimensions are split. Because, after all, our beliefs determine whether we will take path A or B.
