I once read about "tall reeds" somewhere in the financial press. The analyst used this moniker to describe early indicators that showed which way the financial winds were blowing. But there are "tall reeds" in the world of sexual orientation too.
Yesterday I was in my favorite thrift store. Four twenty-something guys walked by. They were as swish as they were buff. And they all knew how to dress to show off their...errr...finer points. But they were not being showy or loud or anything. They were just being themselves and not worrying about what people might think.
The little group became enamored of some white slacks in the ladies section and were trying to translate lady sizes into guy sizes. One of the guys wasn't so swish and would flash a slightly embarrassed smile when another would ask him to feel a fabric or the like.
They were just so casual, so normal, so uninhibited. It was a treat just to watch them be themselves. This ain't California. Guys are only openly gay in certain venues around here. But I see this as a "tall reed" that times are a changin', and changing for the better. It's nice just to watch it happen. Makes a body feel happy.
